Lightning fast 3v3 lacrosse action comes to Sammamish this weekend as the annual Sammamish Shoot-Out gets underway on the grass fields at Pine Lake Middle School. Teams from WA, OR and BC compete in 4 girls divisions and 5 boys divisions starting with 3/4 grade through 11/12 High School JV & Varsity stars. Play begins at 9:00 AM and runs through the championship matches at 4:00 PM.

The ISD Girls Varsity closed out the regular season tonight undefeated!!

The Issy Lady Laxers handed (10-1) Lakeside Varsity a 18-5 drubbing on Senior Night to close out the season with a perfect 12-0 record; best in the Division II conference. Next on the agenda: a reprise trip to the Washington State Championship game with winning as the goal.

We've had an amazing season! In our first year in Washington, we won our division and earned the #1 seed in the NLL playoffs. We beat the Minnesota Swarm in the first round on Saturday, and now we're getting ready to take on Edmonton in the semi-finals. IYL Laxers - this Friday night, April 9th, is IYL Night as the Issaquah Lacrosse HS team takes on Mercer Island for a repeat of the 2009 Washington State Championship game! Varsity game time is 8:00 PM. The winner will emerge as the front-runner for the top seed in the 2010 playoffs.

Love great Lacrosse? You do not want to miss this game, and do not miss the chance to show your IYL pride at school and at the game by wearing your IYL game Jersey. This is one of the few times each year when you can wear your game jersey at a non-game event; so get it on and get in the game!!

The Issaquah High School club has designated this Friday as their annual "IYL Night" to recognize all the up-an-coming lacrosse players in the entire IYL system, both young men and women, and no matter what High School they may ultimately attend.

Parents & Players --

Tomorrow marks the first week of regular season games for the 2010 Lacrosse season. Good luck to all!

Our players have the privilege of playing lacrosse on excellent turf (synthetic) fields for many of their games, both home and away. Our teams' have home games at the City of Sammamish Skyline Community Fields, and at Issaquah Central Park in the Highlands. We must take care of these fields and treat them well, or we could lose our access to them. The rules for turf fields are very similar among all the facilities in our region, and these rules or their equivalent are posted at each field:

* No food or drink of any kind allowed on the turf, except water. This means no coffee, sports drinks, energy bars, fruit, etc. Water only.

* No animals on the field ever.

* Rubber cleats only. No metal cleats.

* Carry off what you carry on. Do not leave any water bottles, paper, clothing, etc.
Never walk on the field occupied by another group.

In addition, the City of Issaquah has an additional rule which we must strictly enforce for all games at Central Park:

* Spectators are not allowed on the turf before, during or after the game. Only players, coaches, and officials (including timers, spotters and scorekeepers) are allowed inside the fenced area. The spectator area for Central Park #5 (boys field) is at the far south end of turfed area along the low chain-link fence.

While these rules may cause you some slight inconvenience in the moment, losing access to the fields would be even worse and could be the consequence of our collective failure to honor the rules. So please do your part.

This year their are two Lacrosse proposals before the WIAA Representative Assembly. One to add Lacrosse for girls at the middle school and high school level, and a second to add Lacrosse for boys at these same levels. The WIAA Assembly will vote on these proposals when they meet on April 23.

WSU Shutters Lax Program for 2010 - Huskies Now Playing CWU Wildcats

UW Huskies vs CWU Wildcats

The "Lax Apple Cup" match between the UW Huskies and WSU Cougars scheduled for February 20th has been replaced by a UW - Central Washington University Wildcats matchup. The Huskies/Wildcats matchup is same time/same place - Feb 20th at 7:00 PM at Eastside Catholic School.

We still have Dogs & Cats playing together and this should be some great regional college lacrosse! Be there!!

IYL Senior Boy's Clinic and Skill Assessments

The 2010 annual Senior Boy's 3-day Skill Assessment and Clinic begins Friday, 5th February at Skyline Community Fields in Sammamish and continues on Saturday, 6th & Monday, 8th.

All eligible* Seniors participate in a series of drill stations, running and agility tests and scrimmages. This is a high-intensity beginning to the 2010 Spring season for all Seniors. The League also uses these sessions to select the two IYL "A" teams and assess the general skill level of all players so that regular team rosters can be assigned to create teams that are at rough parity for regular season play.

All eligible* registered Senior (7/8 Grades) Boys should attend all three clinics, and must attend at least two of the three clinics. The second clinic will be held on Saturday, 6th from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and again on Monday, 8th from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. All clinics are held at Skyline Community Fields.

Note: Players should arrive with full gear and be dressed & game ready at the clinic start times. Registration opens at 5:00 PM on Friday and 5:30 PM on Saturday and Monday. Players & Parents must turn in a signed Concussion Awareness Form before joining the clinic drills.

*Eligibility Requirements: Players must be registered, have all IYL registration fees paid in full, have a valid US Lacrosse membership, and have provided a signed Concussion Awareness Form to league officials as required by Washington State law.

Directors from the leading Eastside lacrosse programs came together earlier this year and formed the Greater Eastside Lacrosse League (“GELL”).

GELL was formed to provide for greater flexibility in managing the Eastside region's boys youth programs in closer alignment with each other and with the affiliated high school programs in our area. Read MORE HERE for details on GELL’s formation and what it means to IYL and lacrosse in our region.

IYL Co-Presidents Matthew Balkman & Scott Wiley Announce Leadership Transition

This week IYL Co-Presidents Matthew Balkman and Scott Wiley announced a transition in IYL leadership in a letter to friends of Issaquah Youth Lacrosse. Stepping into their new role as Co-Presidents Emeritus, Matthew and Scott set the stage for IYL's continued growth -

In their words [partial excerpt]:

When we assembled a group of a dozen middle-school boys for their first Lacrosse clinic six years ago, we had no idea how or even if Lacrosse could take root and grow in Issaquah. It wasn't until the next clinic – a couple of months later -- when nearly 100 kids attended that we knew Lacrosse was destined to be the next great thing in youth sports.

Issaquah Youth Lacrosse was born in 2004 to foster the growth and development of our youth through the fun and fellowship of a great team sport. IYL as an organization has experienced steady and exponential growth, we have had many IYL players go on to compete in HS State Championships, some go on to play at the collegiate level, and the overall awareness and love of the game expand tremendously in our community. It has been very exciting!

Now, as we look forward to our sixth full season having served nearly a thousand boys and girls, and grown a program which now feeds four boys HS programs (Liberty and Mt Si in ’10) and one girls HS program, it's time to turn to the next chapter for IYL.

With our registrations on track to deliver the largest group of participants ever in our Spring 2010 season and with a strong transitional leadership team in place, IYL will surely continue to be the leading youth Lacrosse program in the state. And with the vision and energy that the new leadership is bringing to their work, we expect IYL to go places we could never have dreamed of back in 2004 with those dozen 8th graders awkwardly picking up Lacrosse sticks for the first time.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement over these six wonderful years!

Issaquah Highlands Central Park Turf Fields Nearing Completion!!

Great news for local laxers as the 2 new turf fields on Central Park Pad #3 in the Highlands near completion. This Spring Issaquah Youth Lacrosse will hold it's first regular season game on turf in the City of Issaquah!

In our 2009 season, IYL teams had an estimated 100+ games and practices impacted by grass field closures due to weather related field conditions. The addition of these new turf fields will really help mitigate what has been a huge annual headache for the IYL field operations team.

2009 Space Needle Shootout LAX Tournament

IYL will have two Peak (select) teams entered in the Space Needle Shootout lacrosse tournament being held this December 4th – 6th at the Starfire Sports in Tukwila.

The teams are "U12" (12 years old or younger on December 4) and "U14" (14 years old or younger on December 4). Most 5 & 6th graders are U12, as are some 7th graders. The U14 bracket includes most IYL 8th graders and some 7th graders.

Coaching the U12 team will be Scott Johnston, Adam Kurtenbach and Gregg Harris
Coaching the U14 team will be Mark Greenhall, Jordan Bayly and Eric Bean

The teams will be selected by the coaches based on the following criteria:

1. Age qualifications
2. Commitment to attend all practices and games, if selected (see schedule below)
3. Positional mix
4. Skill and teamwork exhibited at clinics 11/21, 11/23 and 11/27
5. Skill and teamwork exhibited in Spring 2009 season and/or IYL Post-season "Peak" play

Cost: $50 to cover the cost of practice field rental and tournament fees

Number of players: 18-19 per team.

Critical Public Hearing on Beaver Lake Park Master Plan

The City of Sammamish is holding the 4th public hearing on the Beaver Lake Park Master Plan this Wednesday, 4 November. This is a critical meeting for our efforts to secure all-weather turf fields with field lighting. The last three public meetings have been dominated by the immediate neighbors who oppose fields and lights - we need the Sammamish & Issaquah youth sports community to turn out in force this Thursday and speak up for these critically needed field improvements!

On this Wednesday's agenda will be a presentation of the preferred Master Plan to seek public input. We need to have as many parents and community supports of youth athletics present and in seats as possible to balance the input given to the City Council member, Parks Commission members and City staff who will be present.

The public meeting on Thursday will be held at the Sammamish City Hall, Council Chambers, 801 228th Ave SE, Sammamish, 98075 and runs from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

IYL Fall Clinics Set for November 21st, 23rd and 27th!

The IYL Fall Clinics for 5th - 8th grade Boys are live on the calendar! If you are interested in improving your skills and getting back into playing form make sure one or more of the Fall Clinics are on your calendar. Need more motivation? Want more LAX? Two IYL select teams will be drawn from those players attending at least 2 of the Fall Clinics to play in the Space Needle Shoot-out Tournament this December! More info on this tourney below.

The Fall Clinics are FREE and they are for new and returning players. The first Clinic will be held on Saturday, 21 November at Skyline Community Fields, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. The additional Clinics will be held on Monday, 23rd November and Friday, 27 November - both additional clinics will end by 9:00 PM. If you have friends who are interested in trying Lacrosse before the regular Spring season begins This Is The Time!

Space Needle Shoot-out Tournament runs 4-6 December at the Starfire complex in Tukwila. The tournament team practices will be held the week of 30th November. IYL expects to field two competitive teams for this tournament drawing from IYL's best - one 12 years old and under, and one 14 and under. There will be a fee of approximately $50 to cover the tourney entry fees and practice field rental costs.

Late Night LAX with Coaching Director Mark Greenhall is coming this week to Robinswood Park in Bellevue!! LNL is Thursday, 5th November, 8:30 PM - 10:00 PM.

This is a Free "all-comers" fun-filled boys clinic with skill drills and games for all Juniors (5/6 Grade) and Seniors (7/8 Grade) players of all experience levels. If you have a friend who is interested in Lacrosse but has not played before - bring him along! If you bring a friend who is new to IYL, both of you will be entered into a drawing for cool LAX stuff!

Action Requested for 2 All-Weather Turf Fields @ Eastgate

The City of Bellevue is now at a key point in their planning process for the Eastgate Area Properties and your input over the next few weeks can make a difference in the adoption of a 2-field or 1-field design for this important new park. There is a critical need for new all-weather turf fields for youth sports in our area and the planning efforts currently underway for the Bellevue Eastgate Properties, along with Beaver Lake Park in Sammamish, are two immediate opportunities to add field capacity.

Your input is important and makes a difference!! We need your support for Alternative A which provides for two all-weather turf fields.

You can learn more about the Eastgate Area Property by reviewing the Master Plan presentation given at the July 23rd Community Meeting and also be visiting the Park Planning website.

The City of Bellevue is taking additional public comment over the next 6 weeks and you do not have to be a Bellevue resident to speak up and make a difference for youth lacrosse. The message is simple:

Participation in youth sports programs is exploding regionally - especially Lacrosse!

Lacrosse season begins in February and is played in all weather conditions.

All-weather turf fields with lights are critically needed to meet growing demand.

Bellevue, Issaquah and Sammamish LAX programs are all part of the WA youth lacrosse East Region - and the teams play each other regularly.

Issaquah Youth Lacrosse is an active user of Robinswood and another Bellevue City Park like Robinswood would benefit both Bellevue residents and the larger regional sporting community.

Focus on Concussions in Youth Sports - The "Lystedt Law"

On July 26th, 2009 Washington State House Bill 1824 – also known as the Zackery Lystedt Law – went into effect. As a result youth sports organizations state-wide are focusing attention and educational resources on the risk of head injuries. This law directly affects Issaquah Youth Lacrosse, IYL head injury policies and our 2010 player registration processes.

All Washington lacrosse clubs and associations must now follow all steps outlined below to ensure they are compliant with the law. The two requirements that directly affect registration processes include:

1. Annually require all players and the parent(s)/guardian(s) of those players to sign and return an informed consent form relating to the nature and risk of concussion or head injury. This information sheet shall include the signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury and will be provided at the time of registration.

2. Ensuring that all coaches (paid or volunteer) are educated in the nature and risk of concussion or head injury prior to the first practice/competition. This education shall include signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury. Resources for this education are available in both English and Spanish in the Documents section on this site.

As an IYL parent or athlete, the information on head injuries we are providing on the IYL website [IYL>Documents] is important to review and understand. The new registration procedures are in effect for our 2010 season and are an important part of this effort. The risks of concussion or other brain injury have not suddenly increased but youth sports organizations, medical professionals and government policy-makers are making brain injury awareness and education a top priority for good reason. As parents we invest a lot into our young athletes and as athletes we invest a lot into our sports - knowing the symptoms of sports and recreation related brain injury is an important part of that investment.So dedicate 10 minutes to reviewing the Parents and Athletes Concussion Fact-sheets, print them out and tape on the fridge....

Hydration - Critical to Athletes Health

Summer is in full swing and so are your players. Summer should be full of open gym practices, tournament teams, and camps, but not emergency room trips for dehydration. Remember that in any given practice or game your players will loose between 4-8 pounds of sweat that will drain their bodies of vital fluids, nutrients, and energy. To maximize your players' performance, injury prevention, and health in the hot summer games and practices; remember to talk with them about hydration and best practices.

General guidelines for how much athletes should be drinking:

Drink 12-20 oz 2-3 hours before exercise.

During exercise, drink 6-12 oz every 15-20 minutes.

After exercise, drink 24 oz of fluid for every lb. of weight lost through sweat (this can be measured by weighing themselves before and after practice)

Issy City Council Approves Second Turf Field @ Central Park

Great news for local sports organizations from the Issaquah City Council last evening - the Council approved the addition of a second all-weather turf field to Central Park Pad 3! Now two new turf fields with lights will come on line in early 2010 - perhaps in time for this coming season's play.

It took a lot of work to make this happen and no small part of the thanks goes to local community members who took the time to write the Council and attend meetings - BUT - our community owes a big thank you to the dedicated leadership of the Issaquah Soccer Club whose board members were very active in this effort and also donated $100,000 to support the construction of the second field.

Please Send an Email to the Issaquah City Council encouraging them to move forward with the 2nd turf field.

Detail of the situation are below, but here is the short story:

• Bids are in and they are ready to award Contracts!

• They are short approximately $166,000 for the 2nd field.

• They will be asking for the council to approve using monies from the Park Bond to make up the short fall. This is NOT the general fund. It is Park Bond money already set aside for parks

• Money for the 2nd Turf field comes from Grants and Donations, Including the Issaquah Soccer Club Pledge of $100,000 which will be presented on Monday night to council.

The Time is NOW, the opportunity is GREAT! Act Now!

Washington U-15 Team Makes a Statement in Baltimore

"Has there ever been a more far-flug match-up of lacrosse All-Stars than in this US Lacrosse U-15 National Championship?" asks Lacrosse Magazine official blogger Matt DaSilva as he watched Washington's (The State!) U-15 team defeat Florida's Creeks Lacrosse all-stars 8-5.

By the end of the U-15 National Championship match most observers would agree - Team Washington came to play and proved that there is great lacrosse all over the country. Our U-15 entry had 3 Issy/Samm laxers on the squad - Goalie Brady Hahn, Defenseman Phoenix Abernathy and Midfielder Max Saffle. Together, with their WA teammates they powered through the pool play to be one of only two teams from west of the Appalachians to make the Championship bracket. Seeding then handed our team a challenge in the form of the #1 seeded team from Baltimore and the #2 seeded team from Virginia - while they lost to both top seeds they won the recognition of many that Washington state is the lax leader on the Left Coast.

Congratulations to all the players and coaches of Team Washington!!!

Paul Rabil Shooting Clinic

Paul Rabil drew a big crowd of laxers at Sammamish Community Field this evening and they were treated to a great evening with one of professional lacrosse's rising super-stars. Fans & players of all ages turned out to get a primer on shooting and a shot at Rabil autographs. The summary quote of everyone interviewed by the IYL webguy: Awesome!!

It has not taken long for the Washington Stealth professional lacrosse team to begin making a big impact on the Northwest lacrosse community and establishing themselves as a positive force supporting the nation's fastest growing sport in our region.

Netting the News - Issy Press Reporter Chris Huber

Issaquah Youth Lacrosse has received a lot of press this season. This has a lot to do with the incredible growth of the sport in the Northwest and especially in your IYL organization. It also has a lot to do with great reporting by local writers such as Kevin Endejan (Issy & Samm Reporter) and Christopher Huber ( Issy Press & Samm Review).

Your IYL webguy thought it would be interesting to interview the interviewers and take a peek behind the curtain and see what these journalists think about the explosion of LAX in their community and how they approach covering it.

I first caught up with Issy Press' Chris Huber at the Sammamish Shoot-Out where he was covering the Summers hottest cool LAX event - Chris was working the Boys HS Grand Championship match between the ILC's upperclassmen entry, the Issy2010, and underclassmen Sonic team. Check out the shot of Chris capturing the photo that became the lead image in Issaquah Press coverage alongside the featured shot (Photo courtesy of the Issaquah Press).

Chris has inked a lot of the local coverage of youth lacrosse this season and I asked him about increasing attention Issy Press is giving our favorite sport. Chris' response tells the story - "As a young sports reporter and photographer, I had not thought much about covering youth lacrosse as one of the mainstream sports, like football, baseball or track, but after making some connections within the local youth leagues, I began to appreciate the competitiveness, commitment and organization of lacrosse. " He goes on to comment on the explosive growth of lacrosse in the region - "As football and the other major school-sanctioned sports are something we've always covered and are such an integral part of the community, lacrosse quickly became one of the sports I payed more attention to, due to its increasing popularity here."

When asked about shooting lacrosse he responded, "As I learned more about the sport that helped me develop an eye for the action. I still have a tough time shooting lacrosse, partly because the IYL has reliable, more lacrosse-savvy photographers who provide the Review and Press with great images, and partly because it takes a lot of shooting to get good at such a fast-paced sport." Chris goes on to say "That's the fun of it, it poses a challenge that all sports photographers need and seek out: how to anticipate the next move, the decisive moment. Once I know lacrosse like football, I think it will be just as fun to shoot and report on."

Chris Huber concludes, " It's definitely a sport I and the papers I work for like to cover."

The Flames Claim Gold in Battle of Bothell 5/6 Championship Match

IYL's Silver 5/6 team - The Flames - torched the competition in Bothell this weekend winning 5 games to get into the Championship final and then took a 7-3 victory over a tough Beaverton Select team to claim the gold.

The Flame scored 58 goals while only allowing 15 against over the 6 Battle of Bothell games. The path to gold included three pool wins: Flames 15, Northshore 3; Flames 13, Puyallup 1; Flames 8, Lincoln (OR) 3. Their playoff record: Quarter-final - Flames 7, Maple Valley 2; Semi-final - Flames 8, Sherwood (OR) 3; and the championship match - Flames 7, Beaverton (OR) 3.

The championship game scoring leader was Tyler Johnston with 3 goals, 2 assists and 2 ground balls. Standout attackman Jordan Greenhall had 1 goal, 2 assists and 4 ground balls. Other key match players - McKay Berndt with 2 goals, 2 ground balls and Charlie Kurtenbach with 1 goal. Stats aside this was a team win with great contributions across the roster but come the games final whistle it was goalie Sam Britt who was hoisted into the air by his teammates - Sam and his defense throttled some of the top scoring 5/6 teams at the Battle.

Congratulations to our Battle of Bothell champions...and The Flames organization....

The Stealth Professional Indoor LAX Team Comes to WA

Great news for Washington lacrosse fans! The Stealth professional lacrosse team is coming to Washington and will play at the Comcast Arena in Everett. The Stealth are moving from San Jose, California where they have played the past 6 seasons and reached the NLL playoffs in the last 3 seasons.

The Stealth feature some of the top athletes in the sport including All-Star Captain Colin Doyle, who led the NLL with 111 points in 2009; Rookie of the Year Rhys Duch, who set a new rookie scoring record with 89 points, two-time All-Star Jeff Zywicki and Paul Rabil, the former John Hopkins University standout.

Season ticket reservations are available now on the Stealth website - check it out! All NLL games are on the weekends and Everett is only a 30 minute cruise from the eastside...

Team Washington 2009 Lacrosse Camp - Registration Open!

The 2009 edition of the Team Washington Middle School Lacrosse Camp is now open for registration. This is one of the top "player rated" camps in the northwest and is led by 2008 & 2009 WA State Champion Issaquah Lacrosse Club Head Coach Brandon Fortier and 2007 WA State Champion Bainbridge High School Head Coach Dejon Hush. Coach Fortier and Coach Hush are joined by the 2009 Team Washington players.

Team Washington players represent the top 20 HS lacrosse players of the 2009 high school season. This select team is Washington's ambassador dedicated to raising national awareness of the caliber of lacrosse in Washington state and the quality of players coming out of our HS programs. All proceeds for the Team Washington LAX Camp go directly to support Team Washington.

This week long camp for players in grades 7, 8 & 9 during the 2009/2010 school year runs from July 6th through July 10th and is held at Mercer Island High School. The camp is limited to 80 players giving an amazing 4-1 camper to coach ratio. This camp is for motivated moderate to advanced experience levels only. The camp includes popsicles, positional training, drills, stations, scrimmages, tournament games and more popsicles!

The large contingent of Issy fans enjoyed a great game in a fantastic setting - and great start to a wonderful weekend of Lacrosse.

The 5th Annual Battle of Bothell is taking place this coming weekend, June 19th - 21st at the Bothell North Creek Playfields. This is one of the great Northwest summer tournaments with teams travelling from all over Oregon and Washington to compete in brackets for 5/6, 7/8 and High School Boys.

2008 saw Issaquah region teams sweep all brackets and Issaquah is again fielding competitive entries at all levels in 2009. Come out, cheer on your Issy teams and enjoy a great weekend of youth Lacrosse!!

The Issaquah Youth Lacrosse Senior Green and Senior Purple teams brought home Gold and Silver from the annual Beaverton Invitational Tournament in Beaverton Oregon. The Skyline HS bound Sr. Green players went 3-0 in their bracket amassing 39 goals while allowing only 3 goals against in a stellar offensive and defensive performance. The Issaquah HS bound Sr. Purple players went 2-1 in their bracket to capture silver with their one loss coming from King's Way Select - the 2009 Oregon Cup Select Tournament champions.

IYL Green standout players include Ryan Benz (11 goals, 1 assist), Cannon Gardner (8 goals, 7 assists), Nick Mauzy (6 goals, 1 assist), Peyton Pelluer (15 ground balls, 2 goals, 3 assists), Henry Jarvis ( 11 ground balls, 1 goal, 2 assists), Jimmy Boyle (8 ground balls, 2 assists) and James Fleming (8 ground balls). Faceoff specialist Peyton Pelluer was almost automatic in face-off wins and goalkeeper Chris Debenham allowed only 3 goals in tournament play.

IYL Purple standout players include Julian Ritchie (4 goals, 7 ground balls), Aaron Rosen (3 goals, 7 ground balls), Sean Colter (9 ground balls), and Wyatt Johnson (7 ground balls).

The Beaverton Invitational Tournament for 7/8 grade teams was held on Saturday, 13th June at the Howard Terpening Complex in Beaverton Oregon.

Issaquah Youth Lacrosse "second season" players are gearing up for the 2009 Beaverton Youth Invitational Tournament this weekend. IYL is fielding two teams who will be making the drive south to the Terpenning Sports Center in Beaverton, Oregon for this great annual event.

Fresh off of winning the Plateau Challenge championship this last weekend the IYL select teams are carrying the Issaquah banner to Oregon as ambassadors of Washington lacrosse.

A group of standout Issaquah LAX Club players under the direction of All-State Issy grad David Campi will be holding summer lacrosse camp designed to help IYL 8th & 9th grade players take their game to the next level.

Campi is joined by All-State and PNCLL First Team Issy grad Nick Tierny, Issy grad & UW attackman Matt Robson, and All-State defenseman Mike Gerrard. Together they bring a wealth of experience and passion for the game into a new hands-on lacrosse camp for senior youth select players.

The Issaquah Alumni Lacrosse Youth Development Day Camp is being held at the Eastlake Community Fields July 20th - 23rd. The camp runs from 3 PM to 7 PM daily and is primarily designed for Issy & Skyline HS bound players who will be entering 8th or 9th grade in the Fall of 2009.

Issaquah Youth Lacrosse senior select A team won the inaugural '09 Plateau Challenge with a 7-6 victory over Mercer Island in the championship round. Issy attackman Cannon Gardner scored the winning goal with 15 seconds remaining to cap a 6 point night on 5 goals.

Other notables in this team win are Julian Ritchie with 2 goals, Ryan Benz with 2 assists, Henry Jarvis with 3 key ground balls and goalie Brady Hahn with 7 saves. Great defense combined with solid defensive middie play held the undefeated high-octane MI attack to only 6 goals - their lowest point total of any game in the tournament.

LAX Alert: Beaver Lake Park Master Plan Public Meeting #2

LAX Alert! This coming Wednesday is the second public meeting held by the City of Sammamish on the proposed Beaver Lake Master Plan. Please plan on attending and speaking up for improved multi-use athletic fields and lighting to allow for lacrosse, soccer and other youth sports in addition to baseball.

You can find out more about the Beaver Lake Park Master Plan on the City of Samm web site including the results of the recent public survey. Please get informed and get involved!! Our kids and your lacrosse community need your help to make new turf multi-use fields a reality.

Public meeting #2 is this Wednesday, 3rd June and will be held at the Beaver Lake Lodge in the park starting at 6:30 PM. Come early, bring the family and have a picnic by the lake before coming into the lodge and making your presence count for our youth sporting community!

Issaquah LAX Club Wins Second State Championship!

The Eagles held off a late challenge by Mercer Island to win their second consecutive State Championship title. Issaquah started the game strong with senior Jordan Goldstein scoring four goals and the Jakes combining for another 6 - Jake Fritz nets 4 and Jake Director nets 2. Connor McLain was again a dominating defensive presence and Issy goalie Cameron Danforth stopped the last second MI shot at the end of regulation with a key save.

Overall this was a great team effort and a full team victory! Congratulations to the 2009 Washington State Champions!!

ILC standout midfielder Jordan Goldstein has been selected to play for the West squad in the 2009 US Lacrosse National Senior Showcase game held on June 20th at Bryant University.

Jordan, who started laxing with IYL in the 7th grade, is one of the 96 high school senior lacrosse players from the US selected from a pool of 595 student-athletes. Jordan is joined by fellow 2009 Washington All-State attackman Sam Snow from Bainbridge making Washington one of only 19 states with more than one representative selected to play in the game.

In addition to making the Division II Championship game in just their second season of play, three players were selected for the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association All-State team:

Teagan Cameron, goalie. Teagan came into the playoffs with the highest save percentage among the championship contenders - an amazing 70%!

Katie Mincin, attack. Katie is the leagues second leading scorer averaging 6 goals per game during the regular season.

Brittany Hogan, midfield. Brittany scooped a whopping 67 ground balls during the regular season to lead all players in the championship games.

Our Issaquah HS Girls Lacrosse Team faced Mercer Island Saturday in the 2009 Washington HS Lacrosse State Championships. While Mercer Island won the Div II tournament this year, the Issaquah Team left the stadium winners.

In just their second season as a team these talented players raised their game from a sub 500 initial 2008 season to challanging for the Div II State Championship. This is a remarkable accomplishment for which we should all congratulate the players and coaches!

I want to reassure you that at the District and school level, we are working closely with local health agencies to make sure we are responding appropriately. We are in regular contact with health officials; school nurses have been advising staff and students about practices to stop the spread of viruses; as in all high-flu seasons, custodians are being extra vigilant about cleaning and sanitizing facilities thoroughly; administrators are reviewing pandemic illness procedures; and, in the event of any incidents of concern at a school building, we will immediately contact Seattle & King County Public Health and follow health experts’ advice about how to best proceed.
As a proactive measure, Seattle & King County Public Health has asked schools to distribute basic information and tips that will help community members act in an informed way in the midst of a frenzy of media stories and public concern. Swine Flu in people is characterized by fever (100° or more), sore throat, cough, body aches, headaches, chills, and fatigue. The illness may last up to seven days, but people are considered to be contagious as long as symptoms persist. Anyone with mild flu-like symptoms should monitor the situation and telephone a physician for consultation if necessary.
What you can do to prevent the spread of Swine Flu:
· Sneeze or cough into a tissue, elbow or sleeve. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are also effective.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread can be spread that way.
· If you are sick, stay home.
Please remember that students should stay home when they have any of the above symptoms!

Issaquah White pushed ahead early in Saturday's game v Eastlake Green and the Coaches took advantage of the opportunity to get creative with player positions. As a result goalie Ty Anderton collected his first offensive point playing attack on an assist to Chad Klansnic and Josh Bean can be found illustrating the Sammamish Reporter's Lacrosse Scoreboard firing a scoring shot on goal with a long-stick.

I cannot mention Ty's assist without a tip of the hat to Eliot Van Horne who stepped into goal for the first time ever and preserved the shutout win over Eastlake.

Last year men's and women's teams grades 3/4 through HS Upperclassmen from all around the Puget Sound, Portland Metro, Spokane, and Vancouver converged on Pine Lake Middle School's 9 grass Chumash fields for an incredible action-packed day of 3v3 excitement.

Our annual IYL Family BBQ and team Picture Day is almost upon us! Rain, snow or shine the much anticipated event will be Saturday, 2nd May at Pine Lake Middle School. The party starts at 11:30 and runs until 3:30. All IYL teams - players and families - are invited and the BBq is free!

Improve Beaver Lake Park Ballfields - take the survey!

The City of Sammamish is underway with a master planning process for Beaver Lake Park to set the priorities for future park improvements. One of the key improvements under consideration is upgrading the existing grass baseball fields to improved all-weather multi-use turf fields that would allow for lacrosse, soccer and football in addition to baseball. The addition of lights is also under consideration in conjunction with the field upgrades.

These improvements could significantly extend the usable season and playable hours for the park without impacting the nature trails, beach access and OLA for pet owners. The extended wet & wild spring we are enjoying this year has forced the cancellation of numerous lacrosse practices and games due to the poor conditions of the available grass fields. Adding two all-season multi-use fields would be a huge benefit for our community and kids.

Now is the time for you to have a voice! Please visit the City of Sammamish project webpage, take the online public survey and make your voice heard. Encourage the Parks Department, city leaders and project planners to include ballfield upgrades with turf surface improvements, multi-use layouts and lighting. You can help your children and future children have a great sporting experience with a few mouse clicks and a little keyboard exercise!
